There are some people that have a 7 minute rule. Me? Usually, I'll search for 20 minutes or longer, especially if it's an ammo can. I've seen some devilishly good camouflage on ammo cans. Usually, it just takes awhile until all of a sudden, something clicks, like something just doesn't look right and you have the cache. How long are you searching for ammo cans before giving up?
