Vote Smart

There is – besides the logs off course – a nice way to show you appreciation about geocaches: vote on it.

Sure, there are several initiatives in order to sift the wheat from the chaff. A perfect example are the Geo d’Ors awards in the Netherlands, which are also used in Belgium. There are some demerits on this system, with the strict procedure as major one. All depends on how easy you want to make people to valuate other caches. The most simply I’ve seen so far is GCVote. If you have Firefox, all you need to do is to install the Greasemonkey script. You need to install Greasemonkey first off course. It’s similar to the GCTour script I’ve mentioned before. If you have other GM scripts installed for the gc.com, it’s advisable to put the GCVote script first in the list. Now you van only look at cache ratings, but if you want  to participate and start to rate, you need to provide a password. All is mentioned in this installation page.

Once installed, you can see ratings (you see that my caches need some ratings urgently :-) ):

Wait a minute, you don’t have Firefox or you can’t install it (for e.g. security reasons). There are several solutions for that:

  1. You can use Firefox on a USB stick->no need to install it on a PC. Check PortableApps for details. Extra advice: make sure to read these performance tips.
  2. If you don’t like Firefox, there are alternatives in two different GSAK scripts

And yes, voting is subjective – de gustibus et coloribus non est disputandum -  and cheating can’t be prevented as such. But I can only say that – as IRL – honesty is the best policy in geocaching.
