Transl8
Many of you know the problem. In one of the stages of a multi or part of a mystery/puzzle is asked to transform the word/letters to figures, preferable reduced to one digit.
I you have bad luck, the conversion needs to be done in reverse, meaning Z=1 and A=26. I used to make a table on the cache note in the beginning, but I use a cheat sheet for a while now. But it remains a tedious job. Therefore I created this little ‘application’ which does all the hard work for you. It’s a simple html page with a form and some JavaScript. Maybe I’m reinventing the wheel and there exist already such thing on the web, but I didn’t encounter it yet. I thought that it would nice for others too. You can use it over here. Maybe you don’t want to be online each time or have bandwidth problems with the graphics. No worry, there is a small footprint version available over here, which you can save locally.
The only downside is that it doesn’t work on my Z22, I purchased end of last year. I tried the Opera Mini Browser, but it doesn’t want to install properly if you don’t have a decent internet connection, which I don’t have. I tried to create mu own Palm app, but the tools I’ve been testing are only concentrated on database and no string manipulation. It’s clear now that the Z22 wasn’t my best buy of the year
Update: Freggie pointed out that there was an excell tool called GeoTools available (only in Dutch) which could do the same. It can indeed, although it’s only a small part of the whole tool and it doesn’t reduce it to 1 digit. I tried to import it to my Z22. Needless to say that it was again a failure. Then I decided to create something in Excell on my own and tried to replicate the same in Tinysheet. After hours of struggling, I finally managed to have something running on my Z22. It won’t win the beaty contest but, keeping the limitations in mind, I’m rather happy that I can maybe use it on the WW6 cache event tomorrow. More on that in a later blog. Meanwhile, if someone is interested in the Excell or Tinysheet (if you can tell me how to copy it to PC), please contact me and I’ll mail it to you.
