The Big Freeze

This continuation of freezing temperatures and snow is not my cup of tea. The temperatures didn’t exceed freezing point for more than 15 days now. Maybe I wasn’t that weather conscious before, but I can’t remember that it has been so cold for quite a long time now. It’s about time that this comes to an end and more reasonable temperatures are in place.

First of all, my hands would be grateful. My right hand feels like I’m already over 90 years full of rheumatism. Not so ‘handy’ if you want to geocache. Even warm gloves don’t help, certainly when you want to log. Speaking of, not a lot of geocaching seems to be logged these days. I must admit that I’m reluctant to do some geocaching myself these days. Multis aren’t feasible since you need to stay a long time in the cold making calculations, etc. That is, if the snow didn’t cover the tags or things you need to find. That counts also for trads on a ground level. Even if you take up the challenge to dig under frozen snow, there is no way to wipe out your traces with possible muggle danger as result. You would think that people try to solve mysteries instead, but doesn’t seem be the case either. My “In den beginne” GC1JWTJ hasn’t been discovered since December 21st nor I got any mails for additional hints. Is my mystery that hard to solve that people even bother to look at? I hope that it isn’t the case.

Therefore I like Earthcaches, where you don’t have to search anything as such. Even with the thaw is setting in this afternoon, I’ve tackled this new “De wijnmuur” GC1KGPF. Despite that it’s published on January 5th, it has only tackled 2 times before my attempt. A lot of muggles and appendant dogs were there, but no geocachers. One doesn’t know what they miss. Once you get there, you get a remarkable view as reward.

I would like to conclude with the Great TB race. My Belgian Beer Bug has been retrieved and even travelled already. That’s very good news, especially if you see the number of contestants:

The are still a lot of Travel Bugs who didn’t have the chance to be retrieved from the starting point. It would be only fair if you did go to the The Great TB Race Starting Line GC1KK5G and retrieve at least one of the remaining TBs in order to start their journey. Make sure that it travels far enough. Mine travelled 6.4 km (4 miles) which isn’t bad as such. Don’t get me wrong: I’m very happy with this, but it’s not a big point gaining distance. Also notice that this race isn’t only distance related, but a contestant can earn points with other tasks as mentioned in an earlier blog. So if you happens to be in the neighbourhood (today it’s Kansas city), please make it travel further.

It’s been cold here too. Today should be pleasant enough for a hike and some geocaching, but it’s supposed to be -14 degrees F two nights from now. That’s kicking the legs out from under the thermostat. I didn’t get a TB ready for the big race. With the holidays and everything, it just got pushed aside.

Wow, that also -25 C. We got temps over -20, but not that cold to my knowledge.
