Last Saturday was C-day; the day our team took up the CAROLO GEOCACHING CHALLENGE #1 GC1M4DA
The second week of Easter holiday, we’re all at home, far away from work and school. This could lead to some caching extravaganza, but it isn’t.
My geoaching WE started Friday rather scary. I wanted to tackle Missiehuis GC1MFX8, yet another fine cache from Freggie. Read more…
After the caching raid last monday, this WE seems rather slow geocaching wise. But there some ‘extenuating circumstances’ which I can as excuse. First of all, I had to go to hospital for a checkup after a surgery nearly 2 years ago. My lower jaw was unlinked and reconstructed for orthodontic reasons. I guess the surgeon wanted to know if his masterwork was still in one piece. I knew that I had some time left before it was my turn – I had an appointment at 5:45PM and I was still there at 8PM – , so I decided to discover a couple of cashes on my way to the hospital. I went yesterday to Antwerp in order to do some shopping for all my GPS gear. My car navigation unit had some troubles after an update to the Navteq Q4/2008 maps. The installation process told that it couldn’t on the standard 2 Gb SD card. A second try (without deleting anything) worked but the side effect was that the installation process wiped al my bookmarked addresses. Contacting Navigon didn’t reveal much, which seems to be common for this manufacturer. Read more…
There are a certain type of cache where you know were you should be and don’t know how to get there. A perfect example is wie, hoe, wat…? GCVZ84 in the ancient gates of military ramparts. When you look at the log, you see that many people has found adventurous ways to find the access to the place. I’m not so adventurous and I wanted to take a alternative path I accidentally found. I happened to be rather slippery too and a small misstep would let me end in the water. Luckily it didn’t happen and I ended up at the large gate whereas others usually end up at the other side of the rampart. So far so good, but when I opened the gate, it was rather dark, a lot of waste (how does it come here) and even graffiti. Real spooky. So I took my wind up LED torch -I try to be as environmental friendly as possible – and started to search. This ended up in a disaster. This type of torches are completely useless in such an environment. Since I’m not a shining example (sorry for the pun) of bravery, I gave up rather quickly. Read more…
It’s Friday, thus nearly a geocaching WE. In order to get in the mood, I try to do discover a geocache near work during lunch time. Today, I searched Trainspotting 5 : L139 in Oud-Heverlee GC1AJXP, a cache near a railway mostly used for goods/freight train traffic. When those trains roar by at work, one can’t say anything understandable anymore. Anyway, after a steady walk, I discovered the stash rather easily, based on the additional hint. For some odd reason the last 20 meters had a lot of deviation (due to the trees?). I had the same problem last Wednesday. After I got rid of my braces at the orthodontist late in the evening, I didn’t want to go home immediately and wanted to do a quick cache nearby. But it took at least 10 minutes before I got any signal on my GPSr and the projection I did, pointed to a place that certainly wasn’t correct. After a couple of tries, I gave up. Better luck next time. Read more…
I must admit I didn’t hear about the term ‘muggle’ before I started geocaching. I’m not into Harry Potter and similar stories. Some people don’t like the term and like to refer to a non geoaching person. It doesn’t sound that good, but I don’t mind using both terms. It’s the same thing with the term stash. Read more…
