Sheer drudgery
If a geocacher isn’t in the field nor creating/solving mysteries, one can still work on some geocaching related projects.
Take Merel for instance. He started a project to enter all cities and towns of Belgium into GSAK. The goal is to have the classic statistics but with shaded colours (depending on the number of finds) on a map:
How does he achieves this? All is well explained in his project blog, but – for non Dutch speaking people among you – I’ll give a little resume:
- the town/city borders are defined using tracks within OziExplorer according to certain rules in order to prevent superfluous work
- all tracks are joined in OziExplorer and saved in files
- polygons are defined with an Excel macro
- a GSAK macro fills in the county field of a cache
- an adapted version of the latest beta of FindStatsGen creates the statistics and the maps
Currently he covered 186 of the 589 (31.58%) towns/cities in Belgium, so it’s still a long way to go. But you can help him. If everybody wants to cover the town he/she lives in and sends the data to Merel, his project will be a success (hopefully very) soon.
