Showing the way

There are a certain type of cache where you know were you should be and don’t know how to get there. A perfect example is wie, hoe, wat…? GCVZ84 in the ancient gates of military ramparts. When you look at the log, you see that many people has found adventurous ways to find the access to the place. I’m not so adventurous and I wanted to take a alternative path I accidentally found. I happened to be rather slippery too and a small misstep would let me end in the water. Luckily it didn’t happen and I ended up at the large gate whereas others usually end up at the other side of the rampart. So far so good, but when I opened the gate, it was rather dark, a lot of waste (how does it come here) and even graffiti. Real spooky. So I took my wind up LED torch -I try to be as environmental friendly as possible – and started to search. This ended up in a disaster. This type of torches are completely useless in such an environment. Since I’m not a shining example (sorry for the pun) of bravery, I gave up rather quickly. Read more…

Size does matter

It’s Friday, thus nearly a geocaching WE. In order to get in the mood, I try to do discover a geocache near work during lunch time. Today, I searched Trainspotting 5 : L139 in Oud-Heverlee GC1AJXP, a cache near a railway mostly used for goods/freight train traffic. When those trains roar by at work, one can’t say anything understandable anymore. Anyway, after a steady walk, I discovered the stash rather easily, based on the additional hint. For some odd reason the last 20 meters had a lot of deviation (due to the trees?). I had the same problem last Wednesday. After I got rid of my braces at the orthodontist late in the evening, I didn’t want to go home immediately and wanted to do a quick cache nearby. But it took at least 10 minutes before I got any signal on my GPSr and the projection I did, pointed to a place that certainly wasn’t correct. After a couple of tries, I gave up. Better luck next time. Read more…

Sinterklaas and discoveries

Sinterklaas (see also earlier blog) has been visiting both our place and the grand parent’s (my in-laws) home. That’s a busy WE for the kids. We went yesterday to granny and grandfather yesterday and I picked up WIP cache 2: Klaverblad Lummen GC1J8D1, a work in progress cache. As such it isn’t a difficult one – I stopped the car coincidentally within 5 meters of the cache – but it’s certainly interesting for its value. Each logger takes a picture of the long term infrastructure works in progress and at the end one gets a nice overview. Read more…

I’m podded

I’ve read earlier today the recent Northwoods GeoCats blog where tonka_boy talks about site performance and refers to wayfarer, talking about SEO. I found a lot of useful tips over there. I also discovered the odiogo plugin which converts a blog to a podcast without recording something. Read more…

My first-borns

It’s official, I’ve published my first own cache: TB & GC Motel Afrit 24 GC1JK5Q. It’s a small TB/GC Hotel (therefore motel) at an exit of a highway. I tried to add as much background info as possible about the environment. I hope people like it, despite it’s only intended for exchanging TBs and GCs. Read more…

Muggle oversupply

I must admit I didn’t hear about the term ‘muggle’ before I started geocaching. I’m not into Harry Potter and similar stories. Some people don’t like the term and like to refer to a non geoaching person.  It doesn’t sound that good, but I don’t mind using both terms. It’s the same thing with the term stash. Read more…

Therapy?

Weekends are usual very busy and is dictated by the son’s agenda. Saturday morning: bringing him to the judo training. Meanwhile I make quick purchases at the butcher and the grocery store for a couple of days and pick him up again an hour later. Saturday noon: making lunch, eat and bring the son to keyboard lesson, stay there for 20 minutes and heading home again. Afternoon: the wife wants to do some shopping. Sundays are dictated by the scouts activities of the son. We usually search a cache the time we have between dropping of and picking up the son. Read more…

Virtual scam

I’m disappointed, very disappointed. I had – in my eyes – a good idea for a cache and I was in the middle of  gathering information for the story/background info  when I was suddenly aware that it can’t be realised. At least not in the form I intended to be. Since the place is historical and the possible high amount of muggles, a physical cache wasn’t possible. So why not a virtual cache where people must take a picture of themselves with a GPSr in their hand and e-mail an answer on a question about the location. A good example of this is the earth cache I visited, as mentioned in earlier blog. Read more…

My own Travel Bugs

It’s official. I have my own travel bugs. I found them yesterday evening in my post box. I told you in an earlier blog that it stroke me that the price at EU resellers is way higher than the US prices and they ship on top via expensive courier services. Read more…
