Let the race begin

Against all intentions, I have bought new travel bugs and entered them in two separate TB races.

The first is the Lady Bee. It’s a cuddly/rattle toy my two kids played with in bygone times. It’s a bee at one side and a ladybird at the other side. It’s a contestant in the second edition of the Great TB Race, a race I also took part in last year. I finished somewhere in the middle of the ranking. Not too bad considering about 50% of all of the travel bugs participating in the race went missing.

Another TB is competitor in the HooHaa Travel Bug Race 2, a race I wanted to enter last year too, but it was already started and I would have a backlog from the start already. This time I was on time with The Crooked Key, which is in fact a key from a shed. It looks a bit strange since it’s twisted and I don’t remember how it became in such state.

I hope that both TBs will do fine in their own race. You can follow the on my TB page.

I received the question how I achieved showing these badges. It’s rather simple. All you need to do is add this html:

<img src=”http://img.geocaching.com/stats/tb.aspx?guid=deaba99d-7542-4315-8d11-acd66aca9205″ alt=”" width=”110″ height=”150″ />

The only variable part is the the GUID, which is not so difficult either once you know where to get this info. Go to your TB detail page and at the right hand side you have the Trackable Item Options:

Select the “View in Google Earth” hyperlink, which looks like: http://www.geocaching.com/kml/tbkml.aspx?tbguid=deaba99d-7542-4315-8d11-acd66aca9205. The part after tbguid is the guid you need for your badge. It’ll show the current status and the mileage of your TB. The only downside is that one can’t customize the distance unit. I didn’t expect anything else from GC.come anyway.  Lets face it, the distance bug is still present, even with new Travel Bugs. One still needs to recalculate the distance manually.

Appearantly, it’s not the only problem. I saw this the earlier this week in my founds list.

Last foundSomeone seems to have found the cache in the future. I guess one suffers from the same belated millennium bug as some bank card companies:-)

    I should point out that the badges won’t work unless there is a profile image set up on the individual TB pages. Discovered that when trying to set up the contestants page for last years race.
