Last cache of the year

Today is the last day of the year. A remarkable year with the last 4 months – although it started for real in October – into geocaching with 62 finds. It wasn’t always easy or pleasant. My inexperience, the weather and a couple of accidents casted sometimes a shadow over the geocaching party. I still like it though and I have even tangible plans for 2 additional caches of my own. Paperless caching

I went yesterday to Antwerp in order to do some shopping for all my GPS gear. My car navigation unit had some troubles after an update to the Navteq Q4/2008 maps. The installation process told that it couldn’t on the standard 2 Gb SD card. A second try (without deleting anything) worked but the side effect was that the installation process wiped al my bookmarked addresses. Contacting Navigon didn’t reveal much, which seems to be common for this manufacturer.  Read more…

As blind as a bat

Or better said, I’m as blind as a mole as we tend to say in Flanders. You will understand in the next paragraph what I’m talking about. Read more…

Freggie rules my world

In case you didn’t notice yet: I’m a big fan of the geocaches by Freggie. He manages to let people discover my home town in a pleasant way without making things to difficult in order to let one enjoy the environment. Today I tackled the last one: Wijds Lubbeek – Multi GC1F7GP. Since it was a rather long multi, the girls wanted to stay home and thus it became a father – son trip. Read more…

Birthday Parties

Yesterday I dropped my kids at a birthday party nearby a cache. Needless to say that there isn’t a better way spending the 3 hours I had than attacking “DIEST – de andere kant” GC1FQG8, which is a multi cache. The only spoiler was the weather. Such drizzle always makes me very wet and in this case also the stage description and the paper where I needed to do my calculations on. My cheat sheet with all type of conversion code was luckily wrapped in plastic. I needed it a lot this time for the typical alphabet to digit conversions. Read more…

A better place?

Today is my birthday. My wife wanted to celebrate this with X-mas shopping. I didn’t find the most exciting day I could imagine on my birthday so I went for a caching day instead. After being a roadie for my son, who was giving a concert on his (music) keyboard for his classmates on the last day school of the year, I headed to my first cache. I was really near the parking place of my first cache, I need to stop for a post van, blocking the narrow street. It was a peaceful and nice day, I didn’t hoot and waited patiently until he departed. Then suddenly, the van moved speedily backwards. Bang, on my car. I didn’t have the time to hoot anymore. Result, nearly 2 months after my previous accident the front of my car is damaged again :-( . Caching seems to be a dangerous sport. After a delay of 45 minutes I could tackle my first cache of the day. Read more…

Modus operandi

Yesterday afternoon started my X-mas holiday until January 5th 2009. The ideal time to do some extra hunting. I started with a cache that I’ve been looking for a week earlier. As mentioned in a previous blog, I couldn’t find it due some deviation problems with my GPSr. At least I though so. Freggie confirmed that I was indeed the right neighbourhood. So I did a second attempt as a kind of appetizer for the end of year lunch with some colleagues. Read more…
